Day 02 – Waxahachi to Mexia

Welcome to day 2 of my travels. Admittedly I’m writing this 4 days afterwards so things are not as fresh.

I left the hotel at about 6:30 a.m. and found my way out of Waxahachi following google maps voice prompting. Beautiful crisp morning air. I find that I’m not all that hungry when I awake so I hitting the road.

Wide Open Spaces!

After about 2 hours of riding, I arrived at the town of Avalon. There was a small restaurant on the side of the road so I stopped for breakfast (and resting 🙂 GREAT breakfast with a Mexican food flair.

After “refueling” I continued on my journey on FM55 heading south. Nice peaceful road with very little traffic going thru the town of Blooming Grove and continuing south.

Here is where things got interesting. Beware of Google maps! The “short cut” for cyclists took me on some dirt roads. While I don’t mind dirt roads these were terrible! The initial dirt road was OK but it soon deteriorated into rocky sandy road to where I had to walk my bike. In many areas my back tire would just slide on the loose dirt. It shook my bike so bad that the front wheel came out of alignment and I had to make some quick repairs. Only positive thing is there was no traffic whatsoever on these roads.

Once off the “bad google” roads it was a straight forward ride on into Mexia. Checked into the Mexia Inn hotel, had another GREAT meal at the restaurant near the motel and settled in for the night. Being tired, I went to bed at 7:30 p.m.

I mucked up the stats for Day 02. In Avalon the stats started over and the 2nd part stopped about 10 miles before I actually arrived in Mexia (pilot error). Overall I covered over 65 miles today.
