Day 03 – Mexia to Normangee

After a pretty good night’s sleep, got up, packed and hit the road about 6:45 a.m. Another beautiful day but a chill in the air but not enough of a chill for me to get out my warmer clothing. The route today (per google) was the most simple of my entire trip:

Another cool morning and I’ve misplaced my biking gloves with fingers but took off anyway at about 6:30 a.m. It was cool enough that I did put on my wind breaker! Before I even got out of Mexia saw this beautiful fresco painting on one of their buildings just south of town so I had to take a pic.

I had not gone that far (3 miles?) when my fingers were really cold so stopped in at this older gas station that served coffee and breakfast sandwiches. So I had a cup of coffee and a grilled cheese egg and bacon sandwich. Really hit the spot! I was also able to buy some inexpensive cloth gloves. Really helped keep my finger warm! I got back on the road at about 7:45 a.m.

As have been each morning so far, just beautiful days and country landscape. FM 39 for the 1st 1/3 had great shoulders and very little traffic this Sunday morning. The shoulders deteriorated and traffic increased but was all manageable. Cool site along the way was, out of nowhere, an huge gas power generating facility. Had to stop and take photos.

Interesting town called “Personville”. Basically all that is left is this historical marker.

Kept traveling closer to Normangee that has no hotels, but the town prior to Normangee has 3 hotels. This one is for Dave!

Continuing on down the road as I was approaching Normangee I came across this stop on the side of FM39 … the “Pie Lady”! Had to pull over and grab some lunch. Of course it was about 3pm by now but the Pie Lady serves breakfast all day on Sundays! It was delicious ! Talking to folks later this place has a big reputation!

Finally made it to Normangee. Nice little town with lots of farm equipment store and churches, but no hotels. I cased out the various churches and decided upon the Methodist church as they had a nice covered area that would work great for my overnight stay. I was just about to call their minister (phone numbers were on the doors) when some cars drove up for some sort of meeting. One of the persons was Rev Mark whom I just about to call. With his permission I was allowed to stay there overnight. He and his fellow members were as nice as they could be to me. We call these folks “road angels”. I ate a cinnamon roll from the Pie Lady for dinner and bedded down for the night.
